Q.1 Answer the following questions.
1. Why the central government had to ‘Reorganise the states’?
Ans. After Independence India adopted federal system and formed four categories of state. The people were not satisfied. They demanded formation of states on linguistic basis. Andhra Pradesh was first to demand. Due to above reasons the central government had to ‘Reorganise the states’.
2. Why did Maha Gujarat movement start?
Ans. Maha-Gujarat movemenr started for demanding separate formation of Gujarat and Maharashtra state from Bombay state on linguistic basis.
3. Which areas were under the French rule?
Ans. Pondicherry, Karaikal (Tamil Nadu), Mahe (Kerala), Yanam (Andhra Pradesh) and Chandranagar (West Bengal) were under the French rule.
4. Why India had to take military action against the Portuguese?
Ans. Negotiations and talks with Portuguese to cede Goa, Diu and Daman to India failed. The movements to integrate Goa into the Indian Union became more intense and violent. On 15 th August, 1955, 3000 to 5000 unarmed Indian activists attempted to enter Goa at six locations and were violently repulsed by Portuguese police officers, resulting in the deaths of around 200 people. After the failure of talks and Satyagragh, Indian government decide to take radical step in form on military action under ‘Operation Vijay’ to free Goa.

Ans. India currently faces problems like –
