Brief Information: Agriculture is a primary activity that consists of growing crops, fruits, vegetables, flowers and rearing livestock. Accounting for 23% of GDP, it employed 59% of the country’s total workforce in 2016. Nearly 70% of rural households still depend primarily on agriculture for their livelihood, with 82% of farmers being small and marginal. As per the Union Budget, the Ministry of Agriculture has been allocated Rs 1,30,485 crore for the year 2019-20. This budgetary estimate is 140% higher than that for 2018-19 at Rs 57,600 crore, primarily due to Rs 75,000 crore allocation to PM-Kisan.
